A few weeks ago, I woke up and I had one of those mornings where I just wanted to be a kid again. You know, the kind of day where you wake up and you pull the covers over your face so just your eyes are peering out and you wait – peering back and forth – for your mom to come into your room and wake you up.
The kind of morning where you’re sure if you delay long enough, you’ll smell the breakfast that’s cooking for you in the kitchen.
I waited…and waited…and waited.
No delicious smells from the kitchen either! I finally got out of bed and there wasn’t even one rubber ducky in my tub. Oh well, I thought. It’s really me and I’ve got to go downstairs and be an adult, don’t I?
I had invited some friends over for lunch that day. My morning mood just wouldn’t wear off so I decided to have some fun with it. A playful hopscotch lunch with school-themed decorations. Why not? I crossed off just about everything on my shopping list for my luncheon that day and went down to my local dollar mart. I wanted chalkboards, pinwheels, hopscotch and grilled cheese and paper plates. Hopefully my friends would too…‘cuz that’s what they were getting.
The lunch turned out to be pretty fun, and I didn’t have to wash one plate (kids never really do!) Now whenever I feel like being a kid, I go with it! It’s fun, it’s festive and well,…it’s not wrong.
Fortunately for me, my friends are used to my quirky moods and themed dinners. Should you not be as full of whimsy (or your friends not as patient as mine), this plan does make a great party for real kids. Back to school, or whatever excuse, it’s all about fun!
