Host the Ultimate Athletic Games Gathering

By Sarah Koller

International sporting games are a blast to watch — but even more fun to celebrate. So this February, we’re encouraging you to get your crew together to host a night of food, festivities and fun. All in athletic style, of course! With these 4 on-theme ideas, your event is sure to score some gold medals among your guests. Keep scrolling to check out these creative ideas, and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram so we can see them for ourselves!

  1. Make it a cultural affair. Even if you’re rooting for the red, white, and blue, show your appreciation for this worldly tradition with an international table. After all, celebrating global cultures is what this event is all about! To start, drape international banners (Amazon $11.55) over your table, then decorate each place setting to represent the participating countries. Use disposable plates, napkins, and utensils to correlate with each, followed by a printed flag for a place setting. To encourage others to get to know what they’re representing, situate a notecard with a few fun facts about their represented area. Then, finish off with a few U.S. flags along the table to really bring it all together.
  1. Create edible medals. Speaking of some hard-earned hardware, treat your friends to the ultimate award — oreo medals. On a dessert tray, lay out several oreos, preferably the golden variety. Then, tuck Pull ’N’ Peel Twizzlers (Amazon $11.99) as the “ribbons” between the two layers. Fasten the licorice with some edible sugar glue (1 part water mixed with 2 parts sugar heated in a saucepan.) To take it a step further, dip the oreos in colored frosting to correlate with the gold, silver, and bronze. Once everything is dried and placed out, it’s time to enjoy your winning treat!

  1. Take the podium. Let your visitors enjoy their five minutes of sporting fame with a podium. To create this, set aside a space in your living room designated as an “awards area.” Drape a themed flag (Amazon $7.85) against the wall as a backdrop before building the main event — the podium! To make this, invest in wooden milk crates (Target $19.99) and spray paint them white. Once dry, flip them over and position them as a trio with a painted placement in the front. Just be sure to have awards and crowns ready to use as props for your guests as they take their photos!
  1. Finish with a torch dessert. The torch-lighting ceremony is one of the most magical parts of the opening ceremony. Make your own version of it at home with the help of cupcake torch desserts. To create, bake vanilla cupcakes according to box instructions (or as your own recipe calls for.) Then, once they’ve been created and cooled, transfer onto ice cream cone cups (Amazon $2.33) and top with yellow or orange frosting. For a more hassle-free approach, elect to use premade icing with a corrugated tip for a “flare-like” effect. Either route you go, the finished product promises to be super snap-worthy.
